At the feet of Allamah Al-Muhaddith Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Ibn Hamad al-‘Abbaad Al Badar (hafidahullaah)

No doubt! Verily, the Auliya’ of Allah [i.e. those who believe in the Oneness of Allah and fear Allah much (abstain from all kinds of sins and evil deeds which he has forbidden), and love Allah much (perform all kinds of good deeds which He has ordained)], no fear shall come upon them nor shall they grieve, Those who believed (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and used to fear Allah much (by abstaining from evil deeds and sins and by doing righteous deeds). 10 : 62/63

All praise is for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds, who ordered us to follow his Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and to call to his way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and upon his family, his companions, and those who truly follow them until the day of judgment.

My recent visit to Madeenah, though on personal work, gave me the blessed opportunity to sit in the study circle of the Allamah Al-MuhaddithShaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Ibn Hamad al-‘Abbaad Al Badar(hafidahullaah) in the blessed environment of Al-Masjid al-Nabawī.

In this article, I would like to briefly share the Seerah of this senior scholar and the few points of benefits from his lessons that I attended.

The Shaykh (hafidahullaah), about 80 years old, was born on the 3rd of Ramadhaan 1353 A.H. in the city of Az-Zulfee, 300 kilometres north of ArRiyadh. He finished his primary studies in Az-Zulfee before moving to ArRiyadh to join the Educational Institute. This was the same year (1372H) that Imaam ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz (d 1420 –rahim’ullaah) started teaching at the Institute after moving to Ar-Riyadh from Al-Kharj, where he had served as a Judge since 1357H. Amongst the colleagues that the Shaykh studied with, at that time, was Shaykh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaamee (d 1416 –rahim’ullaah).

After graduating from the Institute, the Shaykh enrolled with the College of Sharee’ah at the Imaam Muhammad bin Saud Islamic University, Riyadh. And when the Islamic University of Madeenah opened, Shaykh Muhammad ibn Ibraaheem Aal ash-Shaykh (d 1389 –rahim’ullaah) selected him to work there as a teacher.

Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin (hafidahullaah) has authored numerous books, some of which are originally either lectures or lessons he had given earlier. Some of his well-known books and treatises are as under:

1. ‘Ishroona Hadeethan min Saheeh-il-Bukhaaree [20 Hadeeth from the Narrations of Al-Bukhaaree]

2. ‘Ishroona Hadeethan min Saheeh-il-Imaam Muslim [20
Hadeeth from the Narrations of Imaam Muslim]

3. Min Akhlaaq-ir-Rasool-il-Kareem [From the
Manners of the Noble Messenger]

4. ‘Aqeedatu Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah fis-Sahaabat-il-Kiraam [The Creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah
concerning the Noble Companions]

5. Fadlu Ahlil-Bait wa ‘Uloo Makaanatihim ‘inda Ahlis-Sunnati wal-Jamaa’ah [The Virtue of the Members of the
Prophet’s Household and their High Status amongst Ahlus-Sunnah]

6. ‘Aqeedatu Ahlis-Sunnah wal-Athar fil-Mahdee-il-Muntadhar [The Creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Athar
concerning the awaited Mahdee]

7. Ar-Radd ‘alaar-Rifaa’ee wal-Bootee [A
Refutation of Ar-Rifaa’ee and Al-Bootee]

8. Al-Intisaar Lis-Sahaabat-il-Akhyaar [Supporting
the Excellent Companions – A Refutation of the False Allegations of Hasan
Al-Maalikee]

9. Fadlul-Madeenah wa Adaab Suknaahaa wa Ziyaaratihaa [The
Virtue of Madeenah and the Etiquettes of Living in it and Visiting it]

10. Sharh ‘Aqeedah Ibn Abee Zaid Al-Qayrawaanee [An
Explanation of the Creed of Ibn Abee Zaid Al-Qayrawaanee]

11. Min Aqwaal-il-Munsifeen fis-Sahaabee al-Khaleefah Mu’aawiyah [From the Impartial Statements of
the Companion, the Caliph Mu’aawiyah]

The great scholar, Shaykh Hammaad Al-Ansaaree, (d. 1418-rahim’ullaah) said about him : “Verily, my eyes did not see the likes of Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad in terms of piety.” [Tarjamah Hammad
Al-Ansaaree (2/621)]

The great scholar, Imaam Al-Albaanee (d 1420 –rahim’ullaah) would rely on some of the verifications of Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad, as can be seen in his As-Saheehah (5/276). While authenticating a hadeeth about the Mahdee and quoting Ibn Al-Qayyim as saying it was good, he said: “Shaykh Al-‘Abbaad concurred with it in his treatise on the Mahdee.”

He had a very strong and close relationship with his teacher, Shaykh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin Baaz. Whenever someone came from Madeenah, Shaykh Bin Baaz would inquire about Shaykh ‘Abdul-Muhsin Al-‘Abbaad, Shaykh Hammaad Al-Ansaaree and Shaykh ‘Umar Fullaata. [Jawaanib
min Seerah Ibn Baaz (pg. 261)]

Now, let me highlight some beneficial points which the Shaykh’s (hafidahullaah) shared with his students and those who attended his study circle.

The classes are conducted every day, except Thursday, between Maghrib and Isha. His wooden chair is near the shoe rack no. 691 when you enter from Door No. 17 H “Umar Bin Khattab” (radiallahu ‘anhu).

During the explanation of the ahadeeth from Sahih Al-Bukhari, one of his students would read out the text of the Hadeeth with its chain of narrators. Sometime the Shaykh would complete the sanad or mention the complete name of the narrator when this partial name or kunyah is mentioned. For example, where Imaam Bukhari mentions “from Muhammad” the Shaykh would say he is “Muhammad bin Sireen”; where Imaam Bukhari mentions “from Sufyan” the Shaykh would say he is “Sufyan ath-Thawri” and at times he would say “Sufyan bin Uyainah” (being able to distinguish between the two by just knowing the narrator preceding Sufyan). Maasha’Allaah, his memory is really amazing and testifies the depth of the knowledge he possesses.

In one of his lessons, he (hafidahullaah) advised, “A student of knowledge should try to remember the complete names and the kunyah of the narrators as this will not confuse him in this research and study etc.”.

He also explained the text of the Hadeeth and the rulings concerning it and the difference of opinion, if any, that occurred between the scholars, in the interpretation of the text of that particular Hadeeth.

There was a question & answer session and some of the questions put forth were :

Q. I was drunk and committed an accident which resulted in death of an individual. I paid the blood money and fasted for 35 days continuously and then stopped although I knew that I had to fast for 60days. So what is upon me ?

The Shaykh (hafidahullaah) replied, “Upon you is to repent and fast 60days continuously”.

Q. I purchased a musical instrument and then realized that it is haraam. Can I return it to the shop-owner and take my money back, as it was expensive?

The Shaykh (hafidahullaah) replied, “You should not return it to him rather you should break it.”

Q. A sister asked, my husband does not perform regular Salaah although I keep on reminding him. I have 4 children from him. What should I do ?

The Shaykh (hafidahullaah) replied, “You should make those who have influence upon him to intervene in this affair and if still he doesn’t pray, then you should seek separation from him.

I thank Allah Ta’ala for the toufeeq to be present in the study circle, where most of the students were from Al-Jaami’ah al-Islaamiyyah (Islaamic Universityof Madeenah).

May Allaah reward the Shaykh (hafidahullaah) abundantly and those students who are trying their best to seek knowledge from such true inheritors of the Prophet, (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)
