I Hope Allaah Will Expiate Thereby For The Year That Came Before It

Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth; of them four are Sacred, (i.e. the 1st, the 7th, the 11th and the 12th months of the Islamic calendar). That is the right religion, so wrong not yourselves therein, and fight against the Mushrikun (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allah) collectively, as they fight against you collectively. But know that Allah is with those who are Al-Muttaqun (the pious – see 2:2) 9:36

All praise is for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds, who ordered us to follow His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and to call to His Way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and upon his family, his Companions, and those who truly follow them until the Day of Judgment.

Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) fasted on the day of ‘Ashoora’ (10th day of Muharram) and urged the people to do likewise as mentioned in the hadith narrated by Imaam Bukhari (d. 256H rahimahullaah) in his Sahih hadith no. 1865 from Ibn Abbaas (radiallaahu anhu), who said : The Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) came to Madeenah and saw the Jews fasting on the day of ‘Ashoora’. He said, “What is this?” They said, “This is a good day, this is the day when Allaah saved the Children of Israel from their enemy and Moosa fasted on this day.” He said, “We are closer to Moosa than you.” So he fasted on this day and told the people to fast.

It is to be noted that fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ expiate minor sins for the past year, as the Prophet (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said : “Fasting the day of ‘Arafah I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year before it and the year after it, and fasting the day of ‘Ashoora’ I hope Allaah will expiate thereby for the year that came before it.” Narrated by Imaam Muslim (d. 261H rahimahullaah) in his Sahih hadith no. 1162.

Imaam Nawawi (d. 676H rahimahullaah) said : ..Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah expiates for all minor sins, in other words this brings forgiveness for all sins except for major sins.

Then he said : ..Fasting the day of ‘Arafaah is expiation for two years, and the day of ‘Ashoora is expiation for one year, and if a person’s Ameen coincides with the Ameen of the angels, his previous sins will be forgiven… Each of the things mentioned may bring expiation. If he does something that expiates for minor sins he will be expiated, and if there are no minor or major sins, it will be recorded for him as good deeds and he will rise in status thereby… If there is one or more major sins and no minor sins, we hope that it will reduce his major sins. Al-Majmoo’ Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, part 6.

In Fatwaa of Shaykh Ibn Baz (d. 1420H rahimahullaah) it is said…Observing Sawm (fasting) on the ninth and tenth of Muharram is better than doing so on the tenth and eleventh. The latter form is also sufficient for it contradicts the practice of the Jews as well. One may also observe Sawm on all three days, i.e. the ninth, the tenth, and the eleventh of Muharram as is reported in some narrations : Fast a day before (the Day of ‘Ashoora’) and a day after it. But, it is Makruh (reprehensible) to observe Sawm on the Day of ‘Ashoora’ only, i.e. without accompanying it by the preceding or the succeeding day. SEE HERE

“O Allaah! Show us the truth as truth so that we may follow it, and show us falsehood as falsehood, so that we may abstain from it.” Ameen.
