All praise is for Allaah, Lord of all the Worlds, who ordered us to follow His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) and to call to His Way, and may Allaah send praises and blessings of peace upon our Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), and upon his family, his Companions, and those who truly follow them until the Day of Judgment.

That which separates the Ahlul Haq (people of truth) from the Ahlul Batil (people of falsehood), is Ahlul Haq’s strong adherence to Aqidah (creed) and Manhaj (Methodology) ofSalaf Us Saliheen and Tahtheer Wal Hajar of Ahlul Bidah Wal Ahwaa (People Of Innovation and desires).

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ جَاهِدِ الْكُفَّارَ وَالْمُنَافِقِينَ وَاغْلُظْ عَلَيْهِمْ

O Prophet (Muhammad sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam)! Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be harsh against them..9:73

Allaah commanded His Messenger (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) to strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and to be harsh against them. Ibn Abbas (radiallaahu anhu) said, “Allaah commanded the Prophet to fight the disbelievers with the sword, to strive against the hypocrites with the tongue and annulled lenient treatment of them.”4*

SalafUs Saliheen included Ahlul Bidah Wal Ahwaa among the hypocrites as Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyah (d.653 H – rahim’ullaah) said concerning the Nusayris [one of the most deviant sect among the Shia]… The damage that they do to the religious commitment of many people is worse than the damage done by those Mushrikeen and people of the Book who wage war on us.

Every Muslim must do as much as he can of his duty. It is not permissible for anyone to keep quiet about anything that he knows about them, rather he must broadcast it so that the Muslims will know what they really are…

These people are included in this phrase “the disbelievers and the hypocrites”…The one who helps to put a stop to their evil and to guide them as much as he can will have of reward that which is known only to Allaah..5*

Few Quotings from ahadith concerning the subject :

The Imaam ofSalaf Us Saliheen Prophet Muhammad (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) drew lines to the left and right (to the straight line) and said, ‘’ these are the other paths, and on every path is a devil calling the people to it’’6*

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said ‘’Indeed some eloquent speech has the influence of magic” 7*

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said :.. [There will be some] people who invite at the doors of hell, whoever accepted their invitation they throw him in it [hell].. 8*

All the above QuotingS from ahadith clearly indicate that Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) confirmed that there will be individuals and groups who will call to misguidance and deviation from the straight path and their speech will be like magic and obliviously he did not describe them to his ummah except to warn his ummah from their fitna (trials) asking them to stay away from them, as he (sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) said..”Whoever accepted their invitation they throw him in it [hell]”

Narrations from Sahaabah (radiallaahu anhum) :

Similarly, the Sahaabah (radiallaahu anhum) warned against such individuals and groups and distanced them and even boycotted.

When it was said to Abdullah Ibn Umar (radiallaahu anhu) that “..there have appeared some people in our land who recite the Qur’an and pursue knowledge...[BUT] They claim that there is no such thing as Divine Decree and events are not predestined. He (Abdullah ibn Umar radiallaahu anhu) said : When you happen to meet such people tell them that I have nothing to do with them and they have nothing to do with me. And verily they are in no way responsible for my (belief). Abdullah Ibn Umar (radiallaahu anhu) swore by Him (the Lord) (and said) : If any one of them (who does not believe in the Divine Decree) had with him gold equal to the bulk of (the mountain) Uhud and then, spend it (in the way of Allaah), Allaah would not accept it unless he affirmed his faith in Divine Decree.. 9*

lets see , Umar bin khattab’s (radiallaahu anhu) treatment with Sabeegh at-Tameemee, a deviant individual who use to speak with is desires in the interpretation of Quran. Umar (radiallaahu anhu) ordered that Sabeegh to be whipped one hundred times. Then he was confined to a room. When he had recovered, he was called for and he was whipped again one hundred times until he was carried away .. Then Umar (radiallaahu anhu) wrote to Abu Moosa al-Ash’aree (radiallaahu anhu) stating that he, (Sabeegh) was to be prevented from attending the meetings of the people. That remained the case, until Sabeegh came to Abu Moosa (radiallaahu anhu) and swore that there was not anything in him now from what was in him before. So Abu Moosa wrote to Umar, who replied : I think that he has indeed spoken the truth so let him with the people. 10*

Ibn abbas (radiAllaahu anhu) was the first to label the people of innovation and misguidance as “Ahlul Bid’ah Wad-Dalalah” 11*

Narrations from subsequent generations :

After the Sahaabah (radiallaahu anhum), great Imaams of Islam refuted, warned and boycotted all those who opposed the true teachings of Islam and tried to innovate misguided beliefs and practices. Such people were also called as “Ahlul Bidah Wal Ahwaa” [people of innovation and desires], as they use to speak with whims and desires in the deen of Allaah.

Imaam Ibraaheem an-Nakha’ee (d. 96 H – rahim’ullaah) said : “Do not sit with the people of ahwaa‘[desire], for verily their gatherings cause the light of emaan (faith) to go from the hearts, and strip the beauty from the faces, and cause hatred to be inherited in the hearts of the believers.” 12*

Imaam Abu Qilaabah (d.140H – rahim’ullaah) said : “Do not sit with the people of ahwaa‘, and do not argue with them, for verily I do not feel safe that they will immerse you in their misguidance or confuse you in that which you already know.” 13*

Imaam al-Awzaaee (d.157 H – rahim’ullaah) said : Stick to the example of those who came before you (Salaf us Saliheen), even if the people reject you. And beware of the opinions of men, even if they beautify it for you with their speech.14*

Imaam Sufyaan ath-Thawree (d.161 H – rahim’ullaah) said : “Whoever lends his hearing to a person of bid’ah has gone out from the protection of Allaah and is entrusted to himself.” 15*

Imaam As-Saaboonee (d.449 H – rahim’ullaah) said : “.. they (Salaf us Saliheen) were agreed upon subduing ahlul-bid’ah by debasing them, degrading them, keeping them far away, being distant from them and from accompanying them and living with them, and upon seeking nearness to Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala) by avoiding and abandoning them.” 16*

Narrations from some Scholars who have recently passed away :

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (d.1420 H – rahim’ullaah) along with others Scholars said : ..You have to study with scholars who are known for their knowledge and whose ‘Aqidah (creed) is sound, and you should keep away from innovators who go against the Ahlus Sunnah (those adhering to the Sunnah).. You must not study with them, sit with them, correspond with them or read their books, lest they lead you astray from the path of Allaah (Exalted be He). Study the Qur’an with a reciter who reads it well and whose Aqidah and religious commitment are sound. 17*

Shaykh al-Albaanee (d.1420 H – rahim’ullaah) said, “…our elder righteous scholars, such as [Imaam] Malik, [Imaam] Ahmad, and other than them, all used to warn about sitting with the people of innovation; furthermore, they used to promote and command of boycotting them, in fear that their perversions may find their way into their hearts. “See Here

Shaykh Uthaymeen (d.1421 H – rahim’ullaah) was asked a question about the science of al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel (disparagement and appraisal) being dead in our times and no longer being in existence. He rahim’ullaah clarified that al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel is not sick, nor is it buried, nor is it dead. Rather, he explained that al-Jarh wat-Ta’deel still exists in the Sharee’ah courts, in the books of hadith and in warning against the people of innovation and misguidance. Listen Here

Narrations from some Salafi Scholars who are still alive :

Allaamah Rabee’ al-Madkhalee (hafidhahullah) said , “Ibn ‘Aqeel was a mountain from the mountains of the intellectuals, profoundness, and knowledge. He was advised not to go and (sit with) the mu’tazilah [the deviant sect], (he however, did not heed the advice); he went to them and became mu’tazilee. Abu Thar was from the students of Ad Daaruqutnee the Imaam of the Sunnah; he (Abu Thar) heard a statement (from the people of innovation) which overwhelmed him and he became a shi’ite. Abdur Razaaq used to sit with Ja’far Bin Sulaimaan Ad Dabi’ee who had with him some shi’ite ways and thus he (Abdur Razaaq) changed. He adopted shi’ism and thus became a poor impoverished one from the shi’ite; although the shi’ism he had with him was not extreme, and he is not to be faulted (to the same extent of the shi’ite that is extreme); never the less he fell into shi’ism and was affected by it.. See Here

Allaamah Abdul Azeez ar-Raajihee (hafidhahullah) was asked, “Is it permissible for a common person or a beginner in seeking knowledge to mix with the people of desires and innovations, or is it binding to boycott them?”

So, the Shaykh ar-Raajihee (hafidhahullah) replied, “Yes, it is not for a person to mix with the people of desires, as you have heard in the narrations. It is obligatory to be far away from the people of desires and innovations. A person does not sit with them, nor does he mix with them, or visit them, and they do not visit him, and he does not accept their invitation, until they leave their innovation, so that they do not cause him to be diseased, for they cause you to become diseased just like a sound healthy person is diseased by [a dog with] scabies.” [pg. no. 2 of the pdf  See Here

The questioner asked Shaykh Fawzan(hafidhahullah) ” What is the meaning of the statement from some of the Salaf : The innovators are like the scorpion, he buries his head while leaving his tail out, such that when he is able to, he stings?

Shaykh Fawzan (hafidhahullah) replied, Yes. This speech is clear. The people of innovation have with them hypocrisy. The people of innovation have been afflicted with hypocrisy. And it is that they display good while they hide evil, they display good to the people as a way of deception.

يُخَادِعُونَ اللّهَ وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا

They try to deceive Allah and those who believe.. 2:9

And they conceal the evil. And when they have the ability to spread evil, they spread it, just like the scorpion.  See Here and when he (hafidhahullah) was asked “Is the absence of refuting Ahlul Bidah (the people of innovation) – and concealing their falsehood and defending them – considered as deception against the Muslims?

Shaykh Fawzan(hafidhahullah) answered : This is the greatest form of deception against the Muslims! Remaining silent concerning Ahlul Bidah (the people of innovation), and the absence of clarifying their innovation, (Hadha min al-Gish lil Muslimeen) this is deception against the Muslims. And if – in addition to this – they praise and exalt them, then this is more severe and a greater evil. And refuge in Allaah is sought! Thus, it is obligatory upon those who have knowledge to clarify the innovations and newly invented matters. And they must prohibit and warn against the innovation, and NOT remain silent. Remaining silent is considered concealing the truth.Allaah said : Verily, those who conceal the clear proofs, evidences and the guidance, which We have sent down, after We have made it clear for the people in the Book, they are the ones cursed by Allaah and cursed by the cursers. Except those who repent and do righteous deeds, and openly declare (the truth which they concealed). These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the One Who accepts repentance, the Most Merciful. 159-160

It is not permissible for the Muslim who possesses knowledge to remain silent concerning innovation and deviance without clarifying it for the people. This is because if he remains silent, the people will use him as an argument, saying, ‘if this was impermissible or prohibited, then the scholar so and so would not have remained silent about it while he sees it.’ Na’am (yes). Important Note : General Masses, who do not possess any knowledge need to be adviced and educated and to be treated well but those who oppose the truth and are active in calling to deviation and are heedless need to be warned and boycotted.
